Eraring BESS OHTL – Stage 2 Transmission Foundations
Enerven / Energy Infrastructure / Deep bored pier foundations for OHTL towers & gantry supports
The Challenge
As part of Origin Energy’s major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Eraring, IFS & the Milleen Group was engaged to construct the Overhead Transmission Line (OHTL) tower and gantry foundations linking the BESS Switching Station to Transgrid’s infrastructure.
Stage 2 presented new complexities:
- Poor ground conditions, unsuited to standard bored piling
- Requirement for depths up to 22m
- Need for tight integration with project timelines and zero tolerance for delays
“Tight tolerance, challenging ground, no subs — IFS owned it from start to finish.” —Project Supervisor
The IFS Solution
To address geotechnical challenges, IFS implemented a double-wall temporary casing method, allowing us to maintain shaft integrity to full depth and mitigate groundwater ingress and soil instability.
Critically, this entire process was managed completely in-house — with no reliance on external subcontractors. That meant:
- Greater control over timeline and quality
- Streamlined environmental compliance
- Faster mobilisation and delivery
The Outcome
All foundations were delivered to spec, safely and efficiently, within the compressed project schedule. Our in-house delivery model proved its value by reducing coordination risks and improving responsiveness to site conditions.
